MD VIPER ALL STARS REGISTRATION & TRYOUT INFORMATION
Welcome to the exciting world of competitive cheerleading and dance! If you want to compete with one of the world’s top rated, and one of Maryland’s largest, look no further. The following is a brief description of our tryout process.
Cheerleading Tryouts:
Vipers offer a variety of cheerleading teams competing at different ages and different skill levels. We feel that we offer something for virtually everyone! We have teams from Level 1 through Level 5 as dictated by the US All Star Federation or USASF. Additionally, our gym is registered as a member of the USASF. While we don’t require everyone to have a back handspring to be placed on a team, the growing emphasis on tumbling in our industry does make acquiring tumbling skills or having tumbling skills a plus when being placed on a team.
The registration and tryout process will go as follows:
Step 1: In order to tryout you will need to register in person any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday in May, between 5:45 and 9:00 pm at the gym. At that time you will need a parent or guardian to fill out an application form and pay the $85 registration fee. The prospective Viper cheerleader will then spend about 10 minutes with a tumbling instructor so they can be placed in an appropriate group for tumbling classes. Our groups are divided as follows:
Group 1- Working on standing back handspring and round off handspring
Group 2- Able to perform correctly a standing and round off back handspring
Group 3- Able to perform correctly a round off back handspring-tuck
Group 4- Able to perform correctly a round off back handspring layout
Step 2: Starting Monday, May 5th all registered cheerleaders will start a twice-weekly tumbling class for the months of May and June. The cost of this class is $90 per month and is due no later than the start of the first class each month. You will spend these two months working intensively on your tumbling skills. The Viper staff is able to instruct individuals from beginner level skills, to back handsprings, tucks and all the way through to fulls, double fulls and specialty tumbling! During this time your attendance will be documented and evaluated when selecting our teams. The tumbling coach staff, as well as other staff members will observe athletes in the classes. Class schedule is as follows:
Mondays & Wednesdays: Group 2 6 to 7:30 pm; Group 4 7:30 to 9 pm
Tuesdays & Thursdays: Group 1 6 to 7:30 pm; Group 3 7:30 to 9 pm
Step 3: During the last week of June, we will post the teams for our 2008-2009 season. Team practices will start following these postings. And that’s it!! No nerve-wracking solo tryouts in front of a panel of judges. Just you and a group of your peers working out in a tumbling class. What could be easier?!
Once team practices begin you will have two practices per week to work on stunts, jumps, motions, tumbling and flexibility. Additionally, you will take a tumbling class as well.
We are aware that everyone takes a much-needed vacation during the summer. Certainly this is allowed. We do, however, ask you to communicate the dates you are away in writing to your team coaches. Please give them as much advance notice as possible. We also ask that cheerleaders miss no more than two to three weeks of practice during the summer. For level 4 & 5 teams no more than two weeks vacation is expected. The gym will be closed one week per month during the summer and we ask everyone to try and make use of this time for vacations so the team members miss as little as possible. Getting the teams ready for competition takes a great deal of work, and practices are far more productive when everyone is present.
Required team camps will be from July 13th through July16th 2008. Mandatory cheer choreography will be from August 4th through August 7th 2008. Please be sure to make arrangements to be available during this very important time.
Dance Team Tryouts:
Vipers offer dance teams from the youth level up through the senior level. We offer Hip-Hop, Pom, and Jazz teams. The tryout process for dance will be as follows:
Anyone interested in being on a dance team needs to attend tryouts on Saturday, May 10th 2008. Registration will be at 10:00 am. You will need to bring a parent or guardian along to fill out the necessary waivers. There is a $35 fee due at this time to try out. Make all checks payable to Vipers. Then from 10:30 to 12:30 pm you will be divided into groups according to age and taught various technical dance steps and dance choreography. You will be evaluated by our staff during this time. Teams will be posted on Wednesday, May 14th after 3:00 pm. The dance teams will begin practice the week of June 1st 2008. Dance choreography dates TBA.
